The mission of Excelencia in Education, founded in 2004 by Dr. Deborah A. Dr. Lynn Mahoney “We have been tracking the effectiveness of numerous programs, including peer mentoring and learning communities as well as student progress to graduation,” says SFSU president Dr. Lynn Mahoney. Larry has been a mentor to me ever since that moment. I came out to Corvallis, the home of OSU, in July of 2004. While the site has gone through a couple design iterations since my turn behind the “wheel,” I am proud of the work that was done by the team from Admissions and Web Communications.
Social media are the go-to engagement channels for both traditional campus communicators and online-only education programs. When I was in graduate school, my mentor used to talk to me about the challenges of creating a “high tech, high touch” environment in higher education. That was way back in 2004. Students were also encouraged to join and engage with peers, staff and faculty via online message boards, hosted on the PeopleGrove platform by the Tri-Mentoring Program (Ryerson’s peer-to-peer mentoring program). A few of the groups offered through the online message boards on the PeopleGrove platform.
Unwelcoming and non-supportive environments exacerbate symptoms and lead to underachievement, low self-esteem, and a sense of worth (Ford & Moore, 2004). Additional mentorship efforts can include pairing students with mentors of the same sex, race, or ethnicity who regularly meet with to provide support/guidance and modeling.
In 2004, JED and a panel of advisors—including suicide prevention researchers, mental health clinicians in higher education, and student service professionals—adapted the model into a comprehensive approach to serve students in a higher education setting. Peer mentoring programs are very successful in this regard. Air Force personnel.
