In 2005 — long before Curry took the helm — the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges revoked the school’s accreditation because of financial instability. It’s a testament that the college is thriving, thanks in large part to Curry, who has been the school’s most vocal cheerleader. It was a devastating blow to the college.

In 2005, the publication broadened its focus, becoming Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. Dr. Lillian Lowery, who ran public schools in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, ultimately spearheading new national curriculum standards and reforms to student discipline policies, also died in April. She was 67.

During her tenure, Rashad helped modernize the school’s curriculum, expand enrollment among fine arts majors, and design a modern fine arts building, according to Howard officials. 2, at age 81.
