Nearly twenty years later, Patterson-Stephens returned to her alma mater in 2021 to become CMU’s Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Belonging after honing her leadership skills at several other colleges and universities across the nation. After AT&T and Southern Bell merged, HISPA leadership decided to keep the group intact and in 2007 voted to become the independent nonprofit organization it is today. There is also HISPA’s Latinos in College, a leadership development program for mostly first-year, first-generation students. About 200 students attended each event.
