According to the 2023 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) for returning students and the 2023 Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE) for first-year students, 66% of the student respondents to both surveys indicated they felt nervous, anxious, or on edge to the point where it was affecting their lives.
What started as an innovative program to support limited-income and first-generation students at the University of Michigan in 2008 has since grown into a 16-institution collaborative program that has helped hundreds of first-generation students across the country find success in post-secondary education.

In 2023, the UIA launched its University Innovation Lab (UI Lab), an online hub and practitioner community that helps student success professionals innovate to improve outcomes for all students. The UIA invites institutions nationwide to subscribe, learn from the work of our member institutions, and collaborate alongside us.
The Outcomes: Streamlined platform lifts enrollment, cultivates collaboration between faculty and staff, and informs strategic investment decisions based on measurable impact on institutional goals.
