Gipson introduced The Designation of California Black-Serving Institutions Grant Program ( AB 335), a bill that builds on the California Assemblymember Mike Gipson foundation of the states new recognition of Black-Serving institutions. As of Jan.1, to qualify as a California Black-Serving institution (BSI), an institution must enroll 1,500 Black students, or 10% of the total student population must be Black.

Franklin & Marshall College has appointed Dr. Andrew "Andy" Rich, current dean of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at City College of Dr. Andy Rich New York (CCNY), as its 17th president following a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees. Rich will take office in July, succeeding outgoing president Dr. Barbara K. Altmann, who has led the institution since 2018.

Dr. Michael Burawoy, a distinguished UC Berkeley professor emeritus who shaped global sociology over nearly five decades, died Monday evening after being struck Dr. Michael Burawoy by a hit-and-run driver in Oakland. He was 77. Oakland police reported that Burawoy was walking in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Park View Terrace near Lake Merritt when he was hit by a dark-colored SUV around 7:10 p.m.

Neel Ganta has been appointed director of Player Personnel at the University of Illinois. Neel Ganta Ganta previously served as graduate manager during the 2020-21 season when Illinois led the Big Ten in wins and won the Big Ten Tournament Championship, earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Ganta graduated from Kansas State University in May 2020, earning a bachelors degree in finance with a minor in computer science and certificates in data analytics and investment management.

Craig Slaughter has been named executive director of financial aid at Wake Forest University. Craig Slaughter Slaughter has served as the associate vice president for enrollment and director of financial aid at Kenyon College since 2017. With nearly 30 years of experience in financial aid and enrollment management, Slaughter has previously held positions as director of financial aid at DePauw University, the University of Redlands and Indiana University School of Music.
