“In Fall 2022, our first faculty mentor pairings were made,” says Ben Telesca, vice president for student affairs, SRSU. The program began in Spring 2023 with 153 students, 87 of whom were Hispanic. This program paired faculty members with developmental education freshmen.

Leaders saw their student bodies becoming increasingly more racially diverse and understood that scattered programming was not enough to level the uphill climb that students of color felt at their predominantly white institutions. Soon, measuring student success could include metrics related to mental and emotional well-being.
